0DTE Straddle Bands: Reading the Day’s “One-Sigma” Intuition

The theme-colored dashed lines on Structure Insight are 0DTE ATM straddle breakeven bands anchored at 9:31 ET. They are not trade signals—they translate “what the option market pays for today’s volatility” into a price range you can compare against spot.

Structure Insight: 9:31 Straddle Bands

After the 9:31 ET anchor, theme-colored dashed lines span RTH with price labels on the right

What is it?

In SPX 0DTE, the ATM straddle (call + put at the nearest strike) is a rough market quote for how much movement is priced for the rest of the day. If the straddle costs p and spot is S, the band S ± p is the familiar straddle breakeven range.

Many options-structure tools plot this band beside price to show how wide “normal” implied movement is for the session. SunnyQuant anchors once at 9:31 ET so the reference does not jitter every minute—better for intraday comparison with GEX structure and AI briefs.

Why do people say “about 68%”?

Under common statistical assumptions, ±1σ covers about 68% of the distribution

~68% (±1σ)−1σ+1σμ

How does this relate to “one sigma / 68%”?

Statistical intuition

If intraday log returns are roughly normal, the ±1σ band covers about 68% of outcomes (~68.27%). Traders often use the straddle band as a coarse ruler for “where price may spend most of the day”—not a precise forecast.

Options pricing view

Straddle price ties to implied volatility and time left: for 0DTE, p reflects what the market charges for tail risk into the close. It moves with open sentiment, events, and liquidity—we lock at 9:31 to give the session a consistent frame.

How SunnyQuant computes p

From the SPX option chain — not from GEX gamma rows

1. 9:31 anchor

At 9:31 ET we lock spot as the day’s anchor; bands stay fixed afterward.

2. ATM quotes

Find the nearest ATM strike on 0DTE and sum call mid + put mid.

3. Upper / lower

p = call mid + put mid; upper = spot + p, lower = spot − p, labeled on the right.

How to read it with GEX structure

  • Price inside the band: “normal vol” context—compare with gamma walls, flip, and AI range commentary.
  • Price near a band edge: not an automatic reversal, but you are near the implied daily extension—cross-check PCS/CCS alerts.
  • Sustained break outside: realized vol may exceed opening 0DTE pricing—watch negative gamma, events, or trend phases.
  • Not computed from GEX: bands come from the SPX chain; walls come from gamma exposure—they complement each other.
Important Notice

Straddle bands are informational references—not guarantees that price stays inside, and not trade instructions. The 68% / 1σ link is an approximation; real markets have skew, gaps, and event risk. Combine with GEX, liquidity, and macro context.
